Mondrian Gold Coast is on track to open in 2023.

The rapidly expanding Mondrian brand has confirmed its launch into the Australian market, with news this morning of a new dual-tower development coming to the Burleigh Heads beachfront on the Gold Coast.

Mondrian Gold Coast sees the sbe Entertainment Group brand continue its momentum, with the brand declaring its newest development will be one of nine it plans to open around the world within the next year. The news follows the recent opening of the Mondrian brand in South Korea, with Accor Asia-Pacific CEO, Michael Issenberg earlier this year foreshadowing the brand’s growth objectives at the 2020 edition of AHICE.

The 208-room hotel will sit alongside an 89-apartment residential complex

Accor Pacific CEO, Simon McGrath, said the expansion of Australia’s first Mondrian hotel reflected the company’s commitment to developing innovative hotels collaboratively with sbe.

“With the Mondrian brand, sbe creates destinations within the destination, bringing together regional authenticity with sophisticated design, creative programming and a lively bar and restaurant scene,” McGrath said.

“Mondrian Gold Coast will be the embodiment of this philosophy: providing residents and guests with elevated hospitality experiences that match the beauty and vibrancy of Australia’s Gold Coast region.”

The Accor development is a joint mixed-use project with Vitale Projects and will be located on the corner of The Esplanade and First Avenue in Burleigh Heads, with guests and residents to enjoy direct beach access. Comprising two towers, one will be dedicated to 89 residential lifestyle apartments, with the second featuring the hotel’s 208 guestrooms.

McGrath added the buildings will be linked by a three-level podium level which will double as the complex’s common spaces, which will feature facilities including a fitness centre, restaurants, a day spa and swimming pool.

Sbe Entertainment – which was 50% acquired by Accor in 2018 to help facilitate its expansion – also plans to open a Mondrian flagged hotel in London’s prestigious Shoreditch area next year. Further openings are also planned for the Maldives, Thailand, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Germany and Puerto Rico.

Mondrian Seoul Itaewon opened in August 2020

The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Chadi Farhat, failed to hide his excitement and anticipation at opening the first Mondrian hotel and residences in Australia.

“With five open properties, nine in development, and six more to be announced, Mondrian has established itself as one of the strongest brands in the sbe lifestyle portfolio, showing staying power for the long-term,” he said.

“The Gold Coast has grown into one of Australia’s leading travel destinations and the opening of Mondrian Gold Coast is the next step in our strategic global expansion for the Mondrian brand, selecting communities at the heart of the most exciting cultural destinations in the world.”
