Accommodation providers in New South Wales are expected to benefit from further concert-related tourism following a decision by government to lift the cap on concerts for the SCG precinct and Allianz Stadium.

Currently, the SCG precinct and Sydney Football Stadium can only host four concerts each year, but this figure is set to rise to 20.

Tourism Accommodation Australia NSW CEO and acting CEO of the Accommodation Association, Michael Johnson, said major events like concerts play an important role in driving tourism into the CBD.

“Major events including international concerts are great demand drivers for accommodation hotels, hospitality and visitor economy spend,” said Johnson.

“Allianz Stadium is an ideal venue with great transport connections for concerts.

“Intrastate and interstate visitors are always happy to travel to Sydney for a concert – staying normally two or three nights.

“This decision just makes good sense.”

Each international artist is estimated to boost the NSW economy by AU$5 to 7.5 million per show. The current cap is thought to be costing NSW businesses AU$40 to 60 million each year.
