Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year on a new mixed-use luxury hotel in the Canberra CBD after approval to proceed was granted to developer Geocon.

The 11-storey development at Garema Place, around three blocks from City Hill and Canberra’s London Circuit, will feature more than 200 hotel rooms, meetings and events space including a ballroom, ground-floor restaurants and a café precinct and a rooftop swimming pool and bar the company says will become “one of the most Instagrammable locations in Canberra”.

Currently unbranded, the project is currently labelled as Canberra City Luxury Hotel. Plans are currently in place for the hotel to be fully operational by 2022. It marks the next step in Geocon’s strategy which will see several new luxury hotels opened in the national capital. More information on a future luxury hotel in the Kingston Arts Precinct, on which the company has partnered with the ACT Government, will be unveiled in the coming months.

Geocon Managing Director, Nick Georgalis, said he was pleased to see the hotel take the next step in its approvals process.

“This hotel will define the city centre, transforming Bunda Street into a modern and inviting destination which people from outside of Canberra are excited to visit.”

Geocon recently opened Australia’s second Autograph Collection hotel in partnership with Marriott International, which marked the global hotel giant’s first hotel in Canberra.
