The Darling hotel at Sydney’s The Star entertainment complex officially opens for business today, something that has been welcomed by one of the accommodation industry’s peak bodies.

The Accommodation Association of Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Munro, said the opening of the 171-room The Darling hotel is a sign of confidence in both the accommodation industry and Sydney as a leading international destination for tourists.

“The opening of this new hotel heralds a significant milestone for the luxury segment of Australia’s accommodation industry,” Munro said.

“It will be the first new five-star hotel to open in Sydney (CBD) since the 2000 Olympics.

“Adding another world class piece of tourism accommodation infrastructure will enhance Sydney’s reputation as a world-renowned tourism destination, draw more travellers from home and abroad and provide a boost to the domestic tourism and accommodation industry.

“It also moves us one step closer to reaching Tourism Australia’s goal of 40,000-70,000 new accommodation rooms in Australia by 2020.”

A VIP opening party was held for The Darling on Tuesday night featuring a number of Hollywood celebrities, including Leonardo Di Caprio, Russell Crowe, Stevie Wonder and Adrian Grenier.
