Geelong’s former Eden Oak conference facility has been transformed into a hotel and dining destination in a sustainable adaptive reuse project by Plus Architecture, in partnership with BEKL, Mitchell and Eades, and Chroma Group.
Originally designed by McGlashan Everist in the 1980s, the two-storey development sits on a 16,000-square-metre site between East Geelong Golf Course and the botanical gardens with views of Corio Bay.
The project brings to life nearly 3,000 square metres of public space and over 4,000 square metres of guest areas with sophisticated solutions for the entrance porte cochere, western function area and central courtyard.
Interior designers Mitchell and Eades were engaged from the outset to identify opportunities to enhance the building’s extraordinary features.
“These architectural assets represent untapped potential,” said Plus Architecture Associate Dominic Versace.
“Our considered approach allowed us to celebrate the building’s remarkable qualities – its high ceilings, beautiful timber elements, and generous spans – while integrating new amenities.
“The decision to adapt rather than demolish aligns with best practice environmental principles, reducing embodied carbon through material retention and minimizing construction waste, while fostering local trade expertise.”
The North of Eden Bar sees original architectural elements merge with refined finishes and lighting.
“Eden Oak brings to life BEKL’s vision of revitalising iconic buildings to create vibrant spaces for connection,” said BEKL Executive Director, Eva Liu.
“Our aim was to transform this architectural and historical gem into a welcoming destination for travellers and a cherished gathering spot for the local community.
“With a bar, restaurant, function spaces, and accommodation, Eden Oak offers warm and inclusive environment for all.
“This thoughtful new iteration not only preserves the building’s legacy but also fosters a sense of community and exceptional guest experiences that will thrive for years to come.”
The project will be presented at Geelong Design Week with insights from Plus Architecture, Mitchell and Eades, Chroma Group, HGW Projects, and Tract.
