In an Australian accommodation industry first, Mantra Group has launched video job applications as an optional element for jobseekers applying for guest-facing roles through its online ‘MyCareer’ recruitment platform.

Mantra Group Executive Director Human Resources, Cherie McGill, said the option of including a video cover letter was introduced as some applicants, especially Millennials, communicate very effectively in this format.

“We’re not looking for production quality. We’re trying to get to know the applicant on a deeper level so we can more easily identify candidates who embody our company values,” she said.

“We are very excited about this new recruitment tool as it gives our team a greater personal understanding of applicants.”

The first Mantra Group property to utilise video in their recruitment process is the new Peppers Kings Square Hotel in Perth (opening in October 2016).

Jobseekers applying for Guest Service Agent roles at the new hotel now have the opportunity to provide a video cover letter as part of their job application. Applicants are encouraged to create a 60 second video introducing themselves to the recruitment team and answering a couple of questions.

Cherie also gives these tips to creating a standout video application:

1: Keep it short and simple
Just like a traditional cover letter, a video cover letter should be clear, concise and grab the attention of the recruiter. It’s an opportunity to add a new dimension to a resume, and the ability to highlight the applicant’s personality and energy.

2: Engage your audience
Mantra Group is looking for team members who are able to engage with their guests and create a unique service experience. Through video, engage the hiring manager to ensure you’re at the top of their interview list.

3: Choose your message
Similar to an interview or phone conversation, ensure you use words and phrases found in the job description and your resume to highlight why you’re a good fit for Mantra Group.

4: Don’t over think it
Don’t spend hours attempting for the perfect video. The recruiter simply wants to hear about you and what you can bring to the Mantra Group team.

5: Find your hook and close it
Just as you would in a traditional cover letter, you need to identify your ‘hook’ – your one unique selling point that will grab the recruiting team’s attention. Also, don’t forget to conclude the video with a simple statement such as “thank you for your time” but also make sure your individuality shines through.

Both iPhone and Android phone video files are supported, along with webcam on a PC or laptop. Video cover letters should be uploaded to a private YouTube or Vimeo account so applicants are in control of their personal information. The private URL link can then be transferred into the relevant field in their application.
