New build: Mercure Gladstone

Accor’s Mercure brand has added properties in Gladstone and Magnetic Island to its fast growing Queensland collection.

The new-build Mercure Gladstone Hotel is set to welcome guests in September 2012, while Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island has been re-branded from the One Bright Point resort

The 124-room Magnetic Island property is the second Grand Mercure to be announced for Queensland this month, with Grand Mercure Apartments Coolangatta officially launching last week.

Construction has commenced on the new Gladstone Mercure Hotel and the property will be built onsite at the Yaralla Sports Club and will provide 60 hotel rooms, conference facilities and catering.

Accor Hotels’ Vice President for Australia, Simon McGrath, said the timing of the hotel is ideal to maximise on the region’s considerable growth forecasts.

“The Mercure is an exciting new addition to the Group’s growing network of Queensland hotels in regional locations,” McGrath said.

“Gladstone is a thriving industrial hub, and it’s a perfect time for Accor to be partnering with the well established Yaralla Sports Club to leverage the significant development and economic opportunities that are driving the region’s growth.”

said the Club was still very focused on maintaining some of Central Queensland’s finest sporting facilities, which supports 12 active sports Sub-Committees including lawn bowls, cricket, hockey and basketball.

Yaralla’s CEO Will Schroeder added: “The addition of a Mercure hotel will increase and diversify the level of service offered to both the local community and visitors by providing much-needed additional luxury and business accommodation options.”

On Magnetic Island the Grand Mercure will complement the Group’s existing All Seasons Magnetic Island hotel.

Grand Mercure Apartments Magnetic Island General Manager Rita Dickinson said: “We are very excited to offer a high end accommodation option to the Accor network on Magnetic Island, which is undoubtedly one of the shining stars and a natural haven here in the northern Queensland.

“With nearly 80% of the island a protected National Park, the Grand Mercure is perfectly located to offer visitors the best of both worlds – beautiful secluded beaches and scenic walking tracks by day, and indulgent creature comforts within their apartments when they return to civilisation and Nelly Bay each afternoon to unwind.”

The Grand Mercure Magnetic Island offers one and two bedroom apartments (with many offering the option of a waterfront view), plus spacious three-bedroom ocean view apartments.
