In the wake of this week’s earthquake in the Philippines, the message to travellers is clear – if you are visiting an emerging nation, stay in an internationally branded hotel or luxury property where you know your safety and security is of the most paramount importance.

I was in the Philippines attending the Carlson GMs Conference at the Radisson Blu Cebu hotel earlier this week (Oct 15) when the 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck an adjacent island.

I was on the 19th floor at the time and like many guests – and Carlson executives – I had to flee the property soon after the hotel stopped violently shaking.

In the wake of how efficient the staff at the property were following the emergency, it reinforces the message that when you are in an emerging nation, such as the Philippines, stay in an internationally-branded property where you know the staff and management can do their best to deal with an emergency.

At HICAP in Hong Kong yesterday (Oct 17), Carlson Rezidor’s Asia-Pacific President Simon Barlow, who was in the tremor, spoke exclusively on camera and reinforced the message.
